Morning Commute

So yesterday, Wednesday, as I drove to work, I listened to the the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning show. The hosts happened to bring up Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie which led into a discussion about adoption. Without meaning to, the hosts said some incorrect things while admitting that didn’t know much. I, being the person that I am, decided to write them a letter. As soon as I got to work, I went straight to the computer and composed an email. In my email, I talked about people possibly being inspired by celebrities to adopt but not necessarily copying celebrities. (Adoption is too hard for anyone to just being doing it to copy someone.) I also gave my understanding of people adopting outside of their race – not because it’s a trend but more because it’s a need and where God leads people. I also commented on whether a birth mother can change her mind one to three years later and take back the child she placed for adoption. Then I pressed send.

And guess who wrote me back? The Morning Show’s VP of Operations who happens to be an adoptive mother. Not only is she an adoptive mother, but she adopted from Vietnam eight years ago. (I had mentioned Vietnam because it’s always been my mission to make sure people know we are not copying Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. 🙂 ) Needless to say, I was surprised to get a response, and then on top of that to connect with someone who has adopted from Vietnam. The VP of Operations was so nice and encouraging in her emails, acknowledging that the hosts didn’t mean anything by it; they just didn’t know about adoption or how much love it takes to adopt which is why I wanted to write an email because I don’t mind correcting people. 🙂

Anyway, this new found fellow adoptive mom and I exchanged a few emails, and we ended with one that really touched me. She said, “I’ve attached a picture of her (daughter adopted from Vietnam) so you can see it DOES happen…and one day you will come across another set of parents anxiously waiting to go pick up the baby God made ready for them half way around the world.” I really need to be reminded that there is an end to the process and that Scott and I will be united with Elise. It’s easy for me to get discouraged, but interestingly enough, as I’ve become more discouraged I met this adoptive mom through email and another one at our Adoption Conference. Both adoptive moms adopted girls from Vietnam one now 8 and the other 10, so I think I’m going to take the hint and realize that there is an end. 🙂

And hopefully, I will meet a couple anxiously waiting to pick up their baby and be able to return the favor.

  1. How great that you’ve met a couple of adoptive moms from Vietnam recently. I know they help encourage along the way. You are so close to the end. Next year you’ll have your daughter with you and I’m sure you’ll have the opportunity to encourage someone else in their journey.

  2. that is a very cool story. I honestly never thought people were copying Angelina and Brad, it’s such a huge deal to adopt..if I named my kids the same name then maybe, but really people need to grow up.
